Mercedes and IBM team up to develop a new service for the Mercedes me app
Automotive giant Mercedes and technology conglomerate IBM have made it to the headlines for their recent collaboration. Both the companies have announced that they have successfully developed the ‘Urban Guard - Stolen Vehicle Help’ – a service designed for the Mercedes me app that help recover stolen vehicles. The solution expands on an earlier partnership between Daimler (Mercedes' parent company) and IBM that aimed to develop connected car services.
According to Juergen Braun, VP and Industry Leader Industrial, Automotive, IBM DACH, connected car experiences are very important, given that today’s consumers are as inclined toward digital, connected services as they are toward the vehicle’s drive performance. To that end, Mercedes has developed connected car services to engage better with its customers and safeguard their investment, Braun added.
IBM and Mercedes have worked to build the ‘Urban Guard – Stolen Vehicle Help’ into the Mercedes me App and have suitably designed it to help recover lost or stolen vehicles. The service collects the necessary customer and vehicle data which is then shared with officers of the law through a service partner that can officially communicate with police stations or other law agencies as needed.
Initially, in November 2020, European customers were eligible to avail the ‘Urban Guard - Stolen Vehicle Help’ service. The service depicted its effectiveness in the region, leading to the successful recovery of many stolen vehicles. In consequence, the companies have made it available to eligible customers in certain nations across the Asia Pacific and North America.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau claims that car thefts witnessed an increase of 9.2 percent in 2020. With the advent of digital, connected car services however, this issue can be significantly addressed as these services will help the law enforcement recover stolen vehicles.
As per sources familiar with the knowledge of the matter, Mercedes and IBM have worked in tandem to analyze and define the end-to-end processes for this service. Right from enabling customer service in case of a car theft, to backend processing and sharing live data, IBM and Mercedes have worked in close collaboration.
